Legendary Geologist

This scientist was just 33 years old, when he became the Kazakh Minister of Geology — the youngest minister in the history of the USSR. In 1966, the 39-years-old scientist was awarded with the Lenin Prize — the highest scientific decoration in the Soviet Union — along with other geologists for the discovery of huge oil and gas fields in the Mangystau Peninsula, West Kazakhstan. The next year, Shakhmardan Esenov (1927-1994), became the President of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. He also met outstanding people of the twentieth century.

In 1970, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-1980), shah of Iran, visited a geological museum in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Mr. Esenov pictured right with his bespectacled royal guest in the center. Well, both Iran and Kazakhstan are very rich in terms of natural resources. So, the leader of Persia and the chief Kazakh scientist perhaps had a discussion of mutual interest.

In 1971, Mr. Esenov received his senior colleague Mstislav Keldysh (1911-1978) — the President of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Mathematician Mr. Keldysh — a three-time Hero of Socialist Labor — was one of the founding fathers of the Soviet space program. He pictured in the center with Mr. Esenov second from the left. Of course, it is very instructive to interact with such a wise guest!

Kazakh journalist, Gulsym Orazalykyzy (1952- ), wrote a book, Shakhmardan Esenov (“Шахмардан Есенов“), about the geologist, which was published in 2012. It contains a curious story, happened, perhaps, at the beginning of the seventies, which deals with the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982).

Page 86 of the book tells (UPDATE 28.XI.2023 The following story about gold watches is a fake, disproved both by the Esenov family and Major General Vladimir Medvedev, who was Mr. Brezhnev’s bodyguard, in their personal communications to me — D.N.), how the young President of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences was invited to a private party, held in Almaty by the leader of Kazakhstan Dinmukhamed Kunayev (1912-1993), who was about to receive his close friend — Mr. Brezhnev. First, it had seemed as a great honor for the geologist to participate in such a special event, but eventually things took an unexpected turn as Mr. Esenov recollects:

“At the precise time, I arrived to a villa of Kunayev. Soon, he and Brezhnev — an honorary guest — came. Politely greeting each other for some time, we sat at a table. There were five of us: the two leaders, two aides and myself. Tasty food, delicious drinks, humorous talk… The time went by. The guest had one over the eight. We were also in high spirits…

A waitress brought another tasty meal. It seemed that Leonid Ilyich at last noticed her beauty. He shook his head: “What a pretty woman!” and looked at his aide, who had a casket full of gold watches. The Soviet leader slowly chose an elegant timepiece, presenting it to the waitress: “Wear it in good health!” The party went on. At a certain moment, this action was repeated once again. Another food was brought in. Leonid once more revelled in her beauty. Brezhnev looks at his aide, the aide looks at the girl. The casket is being opened and another gold watch is presented to the waitress. I was about to tell him that he has already presented her with a watch. Kunayev glared at me. So, I said nothing. This day the waitress received three gold watches.

The next day, it became clear why I had been invited to the secret session. The next day, guys from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan invited me to tell me that I have to pay the costs of the merrymaking. They produced an invoice: “Thirty seven thousand roubles!” Perhaps, my voice sounded louder than usual, so the surprised guys looked at me, saying: “You will pay“. For several days I tried to find a pretext not to pay, but eventually I had to pay“. (In Kazakh: «Дәл уақытында Димекеңнің дачасында болдым. Бір кезде Димекең мен Брежнев, мәртебелі қонағымыз да келді. Амандық-саулық сұрасып дегендей, біршама уақыт өткізіп, дастарханға отырдық. Бес кісіміз: екі көсем, екі көмекші және мен. Дәмді тамақтар, ләзатты шараптар, әзіл әңгімелер… Уақыт өтіп жатты. Қонағымыз аздап қыза бастады. Біз де көңілдіміз…

Даяшы қыз тағы бір дәмді тамағын алып келді. Леонид Ильичтің назары даяшы қыздың көрікті көркін көріп, байқап қалған секілді. Ол басын шайқап: «какая красавица!» деді де көмекшісіне қарады. Сол-ақ екен көмекшісі бір қобдишаның аузын ашып, алдына тоса қалды. Іші толған алтын сағат. Ол асықпай қарап, ішінен әдемі деген бір алтын сағатты алып даяшы қызға ұсына тұрып: «На! This is a truly amazing story. For example, in 1972 thirty seven thousand roubles were approximately $44,633 at the exchange rate!
